Wild Strawberries

Jack was never whole since the break-up
Though he prayed they would make-up
But that’s now been 7 years

Jack, he heard about her wedding
So he showed up to church with a tie and a .44
He stood by the door and yelled:

“Do you remember we were picking berries, wild strawberries…
And making love in the morning dew?
Do you remember we were planning decades, naming babies?
I wanna mend my life with you.”

They fell in lust @ the Beach Inn
Bumping & grinding and winding
That’s how they began

They fell in love on the highway
Hitchhiking and laughing on down to Costa Rican hills,
Strawberries fields

“Do you remember we were picking berries, wild strawberries…
And making love in the morning dew?
Do you remember we were planning decades, naming babies?
I wanna make sweet love to you!”

Jack was tackled down by the groom’s clan
A gun sound went off and poor Jackie,
He started to bleed

She screamed and pushed past the Best Man
She kneeled down by Jack and she cradled her dying friend
She whispered in his ear, she said:

“I do remember we were picking berries, wild strawberries
And making love in the morning dew
That December we were planning decades, naming babies
I wanna live that life anew
I wanna sin one more night with you, baby
I wanna spend my whole life with you

The Backstory

A musical tragedy of Shakespearean proportions about unrequited love and picking berries. There's a cool twist on the end too.

I was living in Holland when I wrote this.  Me and  my friend Boney went to the downtown Hague Bibliotheek (the library).  I got 2 books of sheet music that night - Squeeze Singles, and Bob Marley's Legend.  The next morning I was playing around with "I Shot the Sheriff" by Bob and "Take Me I'm Yours" by Squeeze.  While playing the chorus to "Sheriff" I heard:

I... I shot the Sheriff... because he could not give me the dot dot dot...
I... I heard about her wedding... because she could not  da da da da da, dot dot dot

I had a cool verse melody for a new song.  I played the chorus of "Take me I'm Yours" (same key and everything).  It quickly morphed into "Do you remember we were picking cherries, wild strawberries."  The melody for the entire song was complete in under 5 minutes.

Lyrically the first draft that I wrote had about 8 verses completely telling the same story that I'm able to tell in 3 now.  I found a way to cram all of the info into just 3 verses.

I fear that when my music is finally out there and enjoyed by more of the public, this song may become my "Barely Breathing" -  You know that song that an artist has to sing when in concert or else face geting egged on the way off the stage.  I saw Duncan Sheik on Youtube playing a live show somewhere in 2011.  He was probably singing "Barely Breathing" for the 10,000th time, but he looked like it was the 100,000th.  He didn't look extra happy... but the audience was transported back to a lighter time in their lives, so they were all high.
