Clever

In my mind I am a king, and you're my queen... we love each other
In my eyes you're just a shy girl, but you’re clever

In my head we're making plans, we're hand in hand... the world is better.
Back in time I was a guy that you found clever

Clever, clever, you're clever
Know that rain don't last forever
And that storms, like sunny days is just the weather

In my mind I'm still a king, and you're my queen, we live together
In my eyes you’re still the shy girl who is clever

Leaving, leaving, you're leaving
After 3 years that were pleasing
Struck a blow so hard that I am barely breathing

Still I don't wanna stay blue
But there's no one else like you
And there's nothing like us two when we're together

In my head we're making plans, we're holding hands... the world is better
Back in time I was the guy that you found clever

After winter comes springtime
After showers there'll be sunshine
Know that you + I this life will shine like summer

Lover, when we were lovers
We'd spend all day under covers
Now it's sad that you would give it to another

But I know you had your reasons...
And I know you wanted freedom
Still I know with time you'll find you were blind leaving

Cuz I know that you're not free,
Cuz there's no one else like me
And there's no place else to be except together!

In my mind I'm still your king, and you're my queen, in love forever
In my eyes you're just a shy girl, but you’re clever...
In my eyes you're still that shy girl who is clever
But back in time, I was the guy that you found clever

Because of this song, I learned how to spell "clever." All these years I thought it was spelled "cleaver"! This is a song about a shy girl who once thought the author was clever.

When I was in Holland I learned the bass/guitar line to Daytripper by the Beatles. The melody line for the verse (over the the E major) where John sings "You've got a good reason..." morphed into the melody for a song of mine called Walls. A few weeks later I wrote the bridge for Walls. It was a strange bridge, but I liked it. But I never figured out what the chords were. The words went something like: "In my mind I am a king, I win awards I don't deserve cuz I am blah blah (I can't remember anymore) and I am nothing."

I filed Walls in the unfinished song section in the library in my mind. A few years ago I was playing Walls and decide to finally figure out the chords to the bridge. I sang it and noticed one major note drones over 2 measures. So I tried singing my bridge melody over 4 different chords with that note in it. It sounded much different with these chords than the way I always heard the bridge in my head. I realized right away that, although the melody was almost exactly the same, this was no longer a weird bridge to an unfinished song - this was going to be a rockin' chorus to a brand new song. Most of the verse ideas came within 15 minutes. A few days later I finished the verse and heard the bridge.

Wrote some sorry, forced lyrics about a month later. Then in Trinidad during the rainy season I sat on the balcony and wrote, "Clever, clever you're clever..." I was stuck. It started raining harder than I ever felt it rain in North America for about 20 minutes. Then it abruply stopped. 10 minutes later it was sunny and beautiful again, like it never rained. I smiled and added next to the first lines,

... know that rain don't last forever
And that storms like sunny days,
it's just the weather

After that first verse, the rest came as easily as copying the contents from a book opened on the living room counter.
